Screen time calculator

Four hours a day sounds like a number. Sixty-one days a year sounds like a problem.

A calculator answers once. If you want this number to move over months, that needs a record: a free habit tracker that shows the whole month on one screen.

Track it as a habit

Use the number your phone reports

Both major phone systems keep a daily screen time average in their settings. Use the weekly average from there, not your guess. Guesses tend to run low, and the gap is usually the unlocks you do not remember: the 40-second checks that add up to an hour.

Then decide what counts. Phone only, or the laptop and the television too? Either is fine. Just know which one you entered, because the lifetime number moves a lot.

The percentage is the honest figure

The years-of-your-life figure is striking and a little unfair. It counts screen hours against all 24 hours of a day, including the ones you sleep. The share of waking hours does not. Four hours a day out of sixteen awake is a quarter of your conscious time.

And not all screen time is equal. A video call with your mother and an hour of scrolling cost the same minutes. The page cannot tell them apart. You can. Cut from the part you would not choose again.

Cut by minutes, not by rules

The cut-back slider is there because a total ban tends to last about a weekend. Thirty minutes a day is 7.6 days a year. That is a week of waking time, recovered without deleting anything, and the number shows up in your phone's weekly report where you can check it.

Work out your screen time in years

  1. Enter your daily average

From your phone's screen time settings, weekly average.

  2. Enter your age and an age to count to

The count-to age is a planning horizon, not a forecast.

  3. Set hours awake

Sixteen is typical. This drives the waking-hours share.

  4. Try a cut

Move the slider to see days a year you would get back.

  5. Copy the link

It reopens the page with your numbers, useful for checking again next month.

Questions people ask

How many years will I spend on my phone?

Multiply daily hours by 365 and by the years you are counting ahead, then divide by 8,760 hours in a year. Four hours a day for 50 years is about 8.3 years.

Where do I find my screen time?

In your phone's settings, under screen time or digital wellbeing. Use the weekly daily average rather than today's figure.

Is this screen time calculator private?

Yes. It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent or stored.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
