A calculator answers once. If you want this number to move over months, that needs a record: a free habit tracker that shows the whole month on one screen.

What this counts, and what it leaves out

The maths is short. Cigarettes a day, times the price of one cigarette, times days since you quit. The price of one cigarette is the pack price divided by how many come in the pack, which is why both fields are there: a 20-pack and a 25-pack at the same price are not the same habit.

It leaves out lighters, the second coffee that came with the cigarette, and the price rise that will happen at the next budget. It also leaves out every health effect. Many sites show a timeline of what happens to your body at 20 minutes, 12 hours, and so on. We have not put one here, because the figures on those pages are usually quoted without a source, and this page does not repeat numbers it cannot point to.

Why counting the money works for some people

A craving argues in the present tense. One cigarette costs less than a coffee and nobody will know. The yearly number is harder to argue with, because it is large and it is yours.

So if money motivates you, move the savings somewhere you can see them. A separate account, a jar, a named goal. Money that stays in your main account gets absorbed into groceries within a month, and then the number on this page is the only proof it existed.

A slip is not a reset

People who smoke one cigarette on day 40 often decide the count is ruined and start again at zero, or stop counting. The day count on this page will not move for one cigarette, and there is no reason your own record should either. Thirty-nine days out of forty is still thirty-nine days you did not buy a pack.

Work out what quitting has saved

  1. Enter your quit date

Leave it empty if you have not quit yet. You will see what a year costs instead.

  2. Enter cigarettes a day before you quit

Use the real number from a normal week, not the lowest day.

  3. Enter the pack price and pack size

The price per cigarette is worked out from both, so a larger pack is counted correctly.

  4. Pick the currency symbol and read the total

Copy the result if you want it somewhere you will see it tomorrow.

Questions people ask

How much money do you save by quitting smoking?

Multiply cigarettes a day by the price of one cigarette and by 365. Fifteen a day at 10 for a pack of 20 is 2,738 a year in the same currency.

Does this include health costs?

No. Only what you would have spent on cigarettes. Insurance, dental work and time off sick all vary too much to estimate honestly from three numbers.

What if I smoked roll-ups or vaped?

Enter the cost of a week's supply as the pack price and 140 as cigarettes per pack, with 20 a day. Any split that gives the right daily cost works.

Is my information saved?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent or stored.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
