What a month of sleep and mood data can honestly tell you
Two numbers a day will show you patterns worth acting on. It will not show you causes, and the difference matters more than most tracking advice admits.

Log two numbers a day for a month, hours slept and a mood rating out of ten, and you get a chart with two lines on it. People look at that chart and reach one of two conclusions, both wrong. Either it proves sleep drives their mood, or it is noise and the whole exercise was pointless.
The useful reading sits between those. Here is what a month of your own numbers can support, what it cannot, and the four specific ways people misread it.
Start with the thing it does well
The strongest thing daily logging gives you is not correlation. It is memory correction.
Ask anyone how they slept last month and you will get an answer shaped by the last three nights and the worst one. That is how recall works. A logged month replaces that impression with a series, and the series is frequently a surprise. People who describe themselves as bad sleepers often find eighteen nights above seven hours and four genuinely bad ones that were doing all the work in their self-image.
That correction is worth the thirty seconds a day on its own, before any chart-reading happens.
What a single month cannot do
It cannot establish that one thing causes the other. Not because thirty is a small number, though it is, but because of how the data was made.
You rated your own mood knowing how you had slept. You logged your sleep knowing what kind of day you had. There is no separation between the measurement and the thing measured, and no month of self-report can undo that. If you believe short sleep ruins your mood, you will rate a six-hour Tuesday more harshly, and the chart will agree with you because you drew both lines.
This is not a reason to stop. It is a reason to treat what you see as a hypothesis you could test, rather than a finding you have already made.
Four ways people misread the chart
Reading the peaks instead of the floor
Eyes go to the tallest and lowest points. But the interesting question is usually not what your best day looked like, it is what your worst days had in common. Look at the four lowest mood days in the month and check what the sleep line was doing on the two nights before each, not just the one.
Ignoring the lag
A bad night frequently lands on the day after next rather than the next day, because the first day runs on adrenaline and the second one pays for it. If you compare each night only against the following day, you will conclude there is no relationship when there might be one sitting a day to the right.
Forgetting the thing that moved both lines
The classic case: a stressful fortnight at work makes you sleep badly and feel worse. The two lines move together beautifully and neither one caused the other. This is the single most common reason a convincing-looking chart means nothing, and the only defence is knowing what happened that month, which you do.
Treating a 7 and a 7 as the same number
Your rating scale drifts. A 7 in a calm week and a 7 in a hard one are different quantities, and there is nothing you can do about it. It means small differences are meaningless. A month where mood averages 6.4 versus one averaging 6.6 tells you nothing at all. A month at 4 versus one at 7 tells you plenty.
Turning a pattern into something testable
If the month suggests something, the next step is not more logging. It is a change, run long enough to see.
- Write down the specific claim before you test it. "Nights under six hours cost me about two points the day after next" is testable. "Sleep affects my mood" is not.
- Change one input and hold the rest still. Add a habit for the input, so it lands in the same grid as everything else.
- Give it a full month. Two weeks will show you your enthusiasm for the experiment more than the effect of it.
- Compare the two months on the floor, not the average: how many days under 4, how many nights under six hours.
The cost of this approach is patience. You will spend two months to learn one thing about yourself, and that thing may be that there is no effect worth acting on. That is a real result and it is worth having, but it is slower than most people expect when they start logging.

Pairs worth logging
Sleep and mood is the default because both are cheap to record and most people have a hunch about them. It is not the only pair that works. What makes a pair useful is that one side is something you can change.

Pick one pair. Running three at once gives you three weak signals and a logging chore you will drop by week three.
A month of your own data is not evidence. It is a good question, which is more than you had before.
When to stop logging
Stop when the question is answered or the logging has become the point. Both happen.
If you have run the experiment, made the change, and the change stuck, the daily rating has done its job and can go. Keeping it going forever turns a diagnostic into a ritual, and rituals with no output are the ones that make people abandon a tracker entirely.
There is also a case for stopping that has nothing to do with data quality. If rating your mood every evening makes you monitor your mood all day, that is a cost, and for some people it is a large one. The feature is optional here for exactly that reason. Nothing else in your grid breaks if you never touch it.

Two numbers a day is a small enough cost that it is worth doing for a month just to find out what your month actually looked like. Just hold the conclusions loosely, and be suspicious of the chart exactly when it agrees with you.
