How the Dry January tracker works

The sheet starts on Friday 1 January 2027 and runs for 31 days, one numbered box per day, each with its own date. Tick the box each evening you did not drink. A missed day stays blank, so the sheet shows the month as it went, not as you hoped it would go.

You can change the start date and the length if you want a shorter trial run in December, or a month that starts later. Nothing you type leaves your browser. Print it, save it as a PDF, or download the dates as a CSV for a spreadsheet.

What Dry January is

Dry January is a month without alcohol, from 1 to 31 January. It is run by the UK charity Alcohol Change UK, which offers a free app called Try Dry for tracking it. This page is not part of that campaign and is not endorsed by it. It is a plain paper calendar for anyone doing the month, wherever they are.

The rule is simple to state: no alcohol for the month. The questions come later, so settle them before the 1st:

  • Do alcohol-free beers and wines count? Most people allow drinks labelled 0.0%. Decide whether 0.5% drinks are in or out.
  • What happens at the first party, birthday or work drinks? Pick your drink and your answer to "just one?" now.
  • What if you slip? Carry on and count the dry days, or restart. Write the choice on the sheet.

Before you start: if you drink every day

Alcohol Change UK warns that people who are clinically dependent on alcohol can die if they suddenly stop drinking completely. If you drink heavily every day, or get shaky, sweaty or anxious when you go without, do not stop suddenly. Talk to a doctor or a local alcohol service first, who can help you cut down safely.

Plan the weekends first

January 2027 has ten Saturdays and Sundays in it, and the first weekend falls on the 2nd and 3rd, before the month has settled. For most people the hard days are not the quiet weeknights but the evenings with a reason to drink. Look at the calendar now and mark the dinners, matches and birthdays. Each one needs a plan before it arrives: what you will order, and when you will leave.

The sheet has two lines at the bottom for exactly this: why you are doing it, and what you will do if you miss a day.

What a month off does not tell you

Thirty-one dry days show you where alcohol sat in your weeks: which evenings, which people, which moods. That is useful information. It is not a health check, and this tracker makes no promise about sleep, weight or anything else.

For a reference point after January, the NHS advises adults not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis, spread over three or more days, with several drink-free days each week. The alcohol units calculator on this site counts your usual week in units.

After January

The month ends, the habit does not have to. An avoid habit in BeHabitual works the same way as this sheet: each evening you confirm you held, the month grid shows the run, and a missed day shows as missed. You can also keep a count of dry days with the sobriety calculator if you are going further than a month.

Track Dry January on paper

  1. Set your rules

Decide on alcohol-free drinks, parties and what happens after a slip, and write the rules in the name field or on the sheet.

  2. Check the start date

The sheet starts on 1 January 2027 and runs 31 days. Change it only if you are starting on another day.

  3. Print the calendar

Print it or save it as a PDF, and put it somewhere you see each evening.

  4. Mark the hard days

Circle the weekends and events where you would usually drink, and plan each one.

  5. Tick each dry day

Only the box with that day's date. A missed day stays blank.

Questions people ask

When does Dry January 2027 start?

On Friday 1 January 2027, and it runs to Sunday 31 January. The tracker starts on the 1st by default and prints all 31 days with their dates.

Who runs Dry January?

The UK charity Alcohol Change UK, which also has a free app called Try Dry. This tracker is a separate free printable and is not part of the official campaign.

Do alcohol-free drinks count in Dry January?

That is your call. Most people allow drinks labelled 0.0%. Some leave out 0.5% drinks or skip them because they keep the habit of a drink in the evening. Decide before the 1st and write it on the sheet.

What if I drink on one day?

Leave that box blank and carry on, or restart: whichever you chose before you began. A blank box is information about which day was hard, not a reason to give up the rest of the month.

Is it safe to stop drinking suddenly?

For most people, yes. But Alcohol Change UK warns that people who are clinically dependent on alcohol can die if they stop suddenly. If you drink heavily every day or feel unwell without a drink, talk to a doctor first.

Is my tracker saved anywhere?

No. The calendar is built in your browser and nothing is sent or stored. Print it, save it as a PDF, or download the CSV.

Start with three habits and one month.

You will know by the end of it whether this is the tracker that sticks. That is a shorter test than most things you have tried.
