Sleep and time

Box breathing and 4-7-8 breathing timer

Follow the circle. In as it grows, out as it shrinks, and a soft tone at each change so you can close your eyes.

3 minute session

A timer runs the session. Whether the sessions happen most days is a different record: a free habit tracker that shows the whole month on one screen.

The four patterns

Box breathing is four even counts: in, hold, out, hold. It is the easiest one to remember when you need it. 4-7-8 is in for four, hold for seven, out for eight; the long hold is the hard part, and many people shorten all three counts at first and keep the ratio.

The other two drop the holds. Slow even breathing is five seconds in, five out, six breaths a minute. The long exhale pattern breathes out for longer than in. Pick whichever you can do without straining. A pattern that makes you gasp at the end of a hold is the wrong pattern for you right now.

What this page does not claim

Plenty of pages promise that one of these patterns will lower your blood pressure or put you to sleep in a minute. This one promises a steady pace to breathe along to. How it makes you feel is something you can check yourself, over a week, which is better evidence about you than anything we could quote.

If breathing exercises make you dizzy, stop, breathe normally, and try a shorter count. If you have a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor before practising long holds.

Making it a habit

Tie it to something you already do. Three minutes after you sit down at your desk, or before you turn the light off. A breathing habit is one of the few that costs nothing, needs no equipment and takes less time than making tea, which means the only thing that stops it is forgetting.

Do a guided breathing session

  1. Pick a pattern

Box breathing if you are unsure.

  2. Pick a session length

Three minutes is enough to notice the difference.

  3. Press start and follow the circle

In as it grows, hold when it stays, out as it shrinks.

  4. Close your eyes if you like

A tone marks each change, so you do not need to watch.

Questions people ask

How do you do box breathing?

Breathe in for four seconds, hold for four, breathe out for four, hold for four, and repeat. The timer above paces each step.

What is 4-7-8 breathing?

Breathe in for four seconds, hold for seven, and breathe out for eight. If the hold is too long, speed up the count but keep the same ratio.

How long should a breathing session last?

There is no fixed rule. Two to five minutes is a practical length to start with and easy to fit into a day.

Why is there no sound?

Browsers only allow sound after you interact with the page. Press start, and check your device is not muted.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
