Meditation timer with bells

A bell to begin, a bell to end, and nothing to look at in between.

Sit for

Settle in before the first bell

Press Test bell once before you begin: browsers only play sound after a tap on the page, and it tells you the volume is right before your eyes are closed. Changing a setting resets the session.

A timer runs the session. Whether the sessions happen most days is a different record: a free habit tracker that shows the whole month on one screen.

Track it as a habit

What each setting is for

The settling-in period gives you ten or thirty seconds to sit down and close your eyes before the first bell, so the session starts when you are ready rather than when you pressed a button. Interval bells are soft and optional; some people use them to notice a wandering mind, others find them a distraction and leave them off.

The closing bell is the same as the opening one. If an interval bell would land in the last few seconds, it is skipped, so the end is one clear sound.

Before you close your eyes

Press Test bell. Browsers only play sound after you have tapped the page, and it is better to find out the volume is at zero before a twenty-minute sit than after. A phone may also dim its screen during a long session; the timer asks it to stay awake, which most current browsers allow.

Making it a daily habit

Short and daily beats long and occasional, and the bell is the easy part. Tie the sit to something that already happens every day, such as the first coffee or the walk home, and keep the length where you would still do it on a bad day. Five minutes you do on Thursday is worth more than twenty you meant to do.

Use the meditation timer

  1. Choose how long to sit

3 to 30 minutes, or type your own.

  2. Set a settling-in period and interval bells

    Both are optional.

  3. Press Test bell

Check the volume while your eyes are still open.

  4. Press Begin and close your eyes

The first bell rings after the settling-in period.

Questions people ask

Is this meditation timer free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no app and no account.

Does it work with the screen off?

The time stays accurate, but some phones pause sound from a page with the screen off. Leave the screen on; the timer asks your device not to sleep while it runs.

How long should I meditate?

Long enough to do it tomorrow as well. Five or ten minutes a day is a common place to start.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
