Why this beats BMI at its own job
BMI knows your total mass and nothing about where it sits. Waist to height ratio knows where it sits, and where it sits is the part associated with metabolic risk. Fat around the middle behaves differently from fat on the hips and legs.
The rule of thumb is memorable enough to use without a calculator: keep your waist under half your height. A person 180 cm tall wants a waist under 90 cm.
