These formulas take height and sex only. They cannot see frame size or muscle, which is why they disagree and why the range matters more than any single figure.

Ideal weight range

Devine70.5 kg
Robinson68.9 kg
Miller68.7 kg
Hamwi72 kg
Healthy BMI range56.7 kg to 76.3 kg

The BMI band is usually the widest row, and the most honest. Bodies of the same height differ by that much while being equally healthy.

Height being measured against a wall

There is no single ideal weight

This tool shows four formulas at once, and they will not agree. That disagreement is the most useful thing on the page.

Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi were each derived for clinical purposes, mostly drug dosing rather than health targets. They take height and sex and nothing else, which means they have no way to account for frame size, muscle, or age. Treat the spread between them as the honest answer.

The BMI range is usually more useful

A healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 converts to a weight range for your height, and that range is wide. For someone 175 centimetres tall it spans roughly 57 to 76 kilograms.

A nineteen kilogram window sounds imprecise, and that is the point. Bodies of the same height genuinely differ that much while being equally healthy.

What these formulas cannot see

Frame size is the big one. Wrist and elbow breadth vary enough between people of the same height to shift a sensible target by several kilograms, and no height-only formula captures it.

Muscle is the other. An athlete can sit well above every one of these numbers with low body fat and excellent health markers. If the figure you get looks wrong for how you actually look, the figure is probably what is wrong.

How to find your ideal weight range

  1. 1

    Enter height and sex

These formulas need nothing else, which is both their convenience and their limitation.

  2. 2

Read the range, not one number

Four results appear. The span between the lowest and highest is a more honest target than any single figure.

  3. 3

Compare against the healthy BMI band

The weight range for a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height is shown alongside, and it is usually wider.

  4. 4

Adjust for what the formulas miss

Larger frame or serious muscle means a higher sensible target. Neither is in the equations.

Questions people ask

What is my ideal weight for my height?
There is a range rather than a number. This tool shows four published formulas and the healthy BMI band for your height. Expect a spread of several kilograms, which reflects genuine variation between bodies.
Why do the four formulas give different answers?
They were derived at different times from different populations, mostly for clinical dosing rather than health targets. None is more correct than the others, which is why seeing all four is more informative than picking one.
Do these formulas account for muscle?
No. They use height and sex only. A muscular person will often sit above all four while being perfectly healthy, so body fat percentage is a better guide in that case.
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
No, and the naming is unhelpful. These are reference points from clinical formulas, not goals. A healthy weight is a range, and where you sit in it matters less than your habits and health markers.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
