Expect this to land within three or four points of a proper scan. Almost all the error comes from the tape rather than the formula, so measure twice and average. Track the trend across months and ignore movements of a point or two.

Why this beats BMI

BMI knows your mass and nothing else. This method uses circumferences, so it has some information about shape, and shape is where the useful signal lives. Two people at an identical BMI can differ by twenty points of body fat.

It is still an estimate built from a regression, not a measurement of your actual tissue. Expect it to be within about three or four percentage points of a proper scan, which is close enough to be useful and not close enough to argue over a single point.

Measuring properly matters more than the formula

Almost all the error in this method comes from the tape, not the maths. Measure on bare skin, keep the tape level and snug without compressing, and breathe out normally rather than sucking in.

Take each measurement twice and use the average. If two attempts differ by more than a centimetre, take a third. Measuring at the same time of day, ideally in the morning, removes another chunk of noise.

  • Neck: just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly down at the front
  • Waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women
  • Hips (women only): at the widest point of the buttocks

Typical ranges

These bands are conventional rather than official, and they shift with age. Essential fat is higher in women for physiological reasons, so the categories differ by sex rather than by any judgement about build.

  • Men: 2 to 5% essential, 6 to 13% athletic, 14 to 17% fit, 18 to 24% average, 25%+ above average
  • Women: 10 to 13% essential, 14 to 20% athletic, 21 to 24% fit, 25 to 31% average, 32%+ above average

What to do with the number

Track the trend across months and ignore small movements. A change of a point between two Tuesdays is measurement noise, not progress.

The most useful thing this figure does is separate weight loss from fat loss. Someone whose weight holds steady while body fat drops is gaining muscle, and the scale alone would have told them nothing was happening.

How to measure body fat with a tape

    Get a flexible tape measure

    A cloth or fibreglass tailor's tape. A metal builder's tape will not follow the curve and will read wrong.

    Measure neck and waist

    Neck below the larynx, waist at the navel for men or the narrowest point for women. Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.

    Add hips if measuring a woman

    At the widest point. The female formula needs all three measurements.

Questions people ask

How accurate is the Navy body fat method?
Usually within three to four percentage points of a DEXA scan for most people. That is good enough to track change over time, and not precise enough to treat a single reading as exact.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
Broadly 14 to 24 percent for men and 21 to 31 percent for women, with athletes lower. Ranges shift with age, and there is no single correct figure.
Why do men and women use different formulas?
Women carry more essential fat for physiological reasons and store it differently, so the female equation includes a hip measurement to account for that distribution.
Is this better than BMI?
For most purposes, yes. BMI cannot separate muscle from fat, and this method has some information about shape. Both are estimates, and both are more useful as trends than as single readings.
