Seven hours 45 minutes is 7.75 decimal hours, not 7.45. That conversion is the most common timesheet error and it never favours the person doing the work.

Midnight is where these usually break

A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is eight hours, but naive subtraction gives minus sixteen. Any tool that returns a negative number for a night shift is doing plain arithmetic on clock values without noticing the day changed.

This one detects that the end time is earlier than the start and rolls forward a day, which is what a person means by that pair of times.

Decimal hours are what payroll wants

Seven hours and 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. Getting that wrong is one of the most common timesheet errors, and it always favours whoever is not doing the maths.

Both formats are shown. Use the decimal figure for anything being multiplied by a rate.

How to calculate hours between two times

  1. 1

    Enter start and end times

In 24 hour or 12 hour format, whichever your device shows.

  2. 2

    Subtract any unpaid break

In minutes. It comes off the total before the decimal figure is worked out.

  3. 3

    Read both formats

Hours and minutes for a human, decimal hours for anything being multiplied by a rate.

  4. 4

Add more rows for a week

Each row is a day, and the weekly total sits underneath.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate hours between two times?
Subtract the start from the end, and add 24 hours if the end is earlier because the shift crossed midnight. This tool handles that automatically.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. Forty-five minutes is 0.75 hours, so seven hours 45 minutes is 7.75, not 7.45. This is the most common timesheet error.
Does this handle overnight shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, it treats the shift as crossing midnight rather than returning a negative number.
Can I add up a whole week?
Yes. Add a row per day and the weekly total, including decimal hours, is calculated underneath.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
