The gap is what starting late costs

A calculator answers once. If you want this number to move over months, that needs a record: a free habit tracker that shows the whole month on one screen.

Why it counts from today

Most reading calculators divide the goal by 365. That is the right answer in January and the wrong one for everyone else. Someone setting a 24-book goal in September, with three books done, needs more pages a day than the January number, and seeing the January number is how the goal quietly dies in November.

This page uses your device's date and counts the days left in the year, including today. The last box shows what the number would have been from 1 January, so you can see what starting late costs.

Pages per book is the number people get wrong

Three hundred is a reasonable average for a novel. It is not a reasonable average for your list if your list has two 800-page histories on it. Look up the page counts of the next three books you will read and use their average.

Speed is the other one. Time yourself for twenty minutes with the book you are reading now, and multiply the pages by three. A dense book and a thriller can differ by a factor of two, so time the kind you mostly read.

Make it a daily habit, not a yearly goal

A yearly goal is checked once, in December. A daily one is checked every night. Once you have the pages-a-day number, track that instead: did I read my 20 pages today, yes or no. The book count takes care of itself, or it does not, and you will know which by March rather than by Christmas.

Set a daily page target

  1. Enter your book goal and books finished

Finished books come off the total.

  2. Set pages per book

Average the next few books on your list.

  3. Set reading days a week

Seven is a streak. Five with weekends off is a plan.

  4. Enter your reading speed

Pages an hour, from a timed 20 minutes.

Questions people ask

How many pages a day to read 52 books a year?

At 300 pages a book, about 43 pages a day if you start on 1 January and read every day. Starting later in the year raises it.

How many pages a day for 12 books a year?

About 10 pages a day at 300 pages a book, reading every day from January.

How long does it take to read 20 pages?

At 30 pages an hour, 40 minutes. At 45, about 27 minutes. Time yourself: the range between readers is wide.

Does this count audiobooks?

Only if you convert them to pages. It is simpler to count them as finished books in the books-finished field.

Numbers are easy. Doing it every day is the hard part.

A calculator tells you where you are once. If the thing you actually want is to keep something up, that takes a record rather than a result.
